ELEVEN

In the morning we didn’t talk about our situation much, either. My cold, or whatever it was, had come back meaner than ever. My head hurt, my throat ached, and my legs wobbled when I tried to walk too much, so I spent the morning in the cave. Bridgette seemed to be fairing a lot better than I was. Maybe it was because I’d played the starring role of Big Spoon the night before, so my body had been more exposed to the cold air than hers, or maybe it was just that she was made of heartier stuff. She took on the job of waiting on me. You know, bringing me food and water from the stream.

I don’t know how she thought this up—I never would have in a million years—but she took my wallet and used it as a cup or bowl or whatever to bring me water to drink. It was a nice leather one my dad had given me for some reason on my last birthday. I’d put the five dollar bill that was in there and a couple of random customer appreciation cards in my pocket. She took about ten trips that day for water, and I felt really bad about it, but I knew I wasn’t up to it.

As far as, like, sick sick goes, I got a little of that, too, but it wasn’t as horrific as I’d feared. There were a few ferns out there that were never going to be the same, but aside from that my body seemed more-or-less okay with the stream water and a steady diet of mushrooms, weeds, and nuts. We probably lucked out, because I know a lot of the water out in the wild can make you really really ill, but neither of us had gotten to the clutching-your-stomach-while-you-scream-out-for-a-priest stage. At least not yet. If she was feeling sick like that too, I didn’t know about it. If she was sick, it had to at least be okay enough for her to hide it. It occurred to me at some point we were probably even luckier with the mushrooms, because so many varieties are poisonous.

It was probably about 11:00 am when we got down to a solid chat. We’d both eaten, and she wasn’t going to make another water run for a while. I was reclining so much in the chair I don’t even know if you could call it sitting. Bridgette was kneeling at my side like some medieval nurse. Not that I really know anything about medieval nurses, that’s just what it reminded me of. She looked kind of ragged and worn out, like a stuffed animal that needed to be washed or mended or maybe just thrown out. Her patheticness was cute, kind of, but I didn’t think me telling her so would go over too well. Not to mention the fact that I was sure I looked a whole lot worse.

She said, “Isn’t it weird to think that we’d be in
